Decide to Ride Explained

by Connie Reitzug, circa 1999

What does it mean when you see "Decide to Ride" on the ride calendar?

The real meaning is that there is no one on that day who has chosen to step up to the plate and lead a ride. Being a Touring Captain and an avid bicyclist, I know that there will be people who want to ride whether something is on the calendar or not. Therefore, in an effort to facilitate the gathering of the like-minded "Mavic (or is it Campy) class," I place a "Decide to Ride" on the calendar. This will give people a chance a place to meet and spontaneously spawn a ride... or two... or three.

I have to say, I am very grateful that I have not had to put too many of these "chance encounters" on the ride calendar. It has been great seeing your level of willingness to lead rides over these past few months. Please keep in mind though, this is the time of year that separates the seasonal from the year-round biker. It is harder to commit to leading a ride when chances are the weather may be cold and uninviting. However, the payoff is great when you have a nice day and a "school" of ride-starved riders appreciatively follow you on the trail you blaze before them.

Thanks for all your support and keep the rides coming.
